Coldharbour Cottage was built way back in the 1760's and many of the original features have been restored or replaced by local craftsmen. At the time of renovation in 2006 the cottage had stood empty for 2 years. The vision was to recreate the type of living accommodation that the old farmer and his wife would have lived in during the 1800s. In addition, it was felt that this experience should be shared with visitors who can learn about the construction of the cottage, the daily life of the shepherd in the fields and his wife and family in the home. Simple educational boards, a quiz for
children and small displays of old items make the cottage an interesting place to stay. Not forgetting the fantastic views across the valley towards the sea, the abundant wildlife, particularly birdwatching and many activities on the Farm. Check out our themed breaks at the cottage below... |

| LOCATION : Coldharbour Cottage is just 3 miles from the ancient town of Rye, 6 miles from Tenterden. It's also only a 20 minute drive to Ashford International Station for EuroStar rail connections to Europe. During your stay at Coldharbour Cottage you may want to burn off those calories with a walk in the park – or through the 60 acres of grass and woodland. Take with you the History Quiz and Treasure Hunt and learn a little more about the Farm, the surroundings and the village of Stone. Walk along the Cliff edge and if you are really fit climb to the top bank and admire a 360 degree view – take your camera! ACCOMMODATION DETAILS Coldharbour Cottage (Sleeps 4-6) is let from Saturday to Saturday (Short breaks also available upon request) , keys are made available from 3.00pm onwards on the first day of your holiday and the property is to be vacated by 10.00am on the last day of your holiday. AWARD WINNING SELF CATERING IN KENT: Coldharbour Cottage won the the ‘Tourism ExSellence Award' from the South East Tourist Board for best self-catering accommodation in the region. FAR REACHING COUNTRYSIDE VIEWS TO THE SEA : The garden room has spectacular views across the Romney Marshes towards the sea. KITCHEN & DINING AREA: This well equipped room is a long outshot created in the same way as a typical Victorian farmhouse kitchen with flagstone floor and features a real working baker's oven set in the wall.. Enjoy cooking in a traditional AGA oven, eat at the large old farm house table and take in the ambience. A wonderful display of garlic strings, shallots, dried herbs, chillies and Parma ham is a feast for the eyes and the beautiful aroma fills the room. Having eaten, the dishwasher will take over or, if you prefer, you can wash up in the old butler sink. Then have a cold drink from the fridge or on those hot summer days and ice cream from the built in freezer. After a day in the countryside, you can wash your clothes the washing machine and hang out to dry on the patio. THE PARLOUR : Step back in time and enjoy a game of jackstraws, snaps and, for the adults, a simple game of tiddly winks. No cheating allowed though, as Queen Vic is keeping an eye on the proceedings. Sit round the table and get serious with a typical afternoon cup of tea and fancy cakes and gossip til the cows come home. The antique gold coloured sofa opens as a double bed for the larger families. This is the room to be quiet and is cool in the summer time. LIVING ROOM : Cosy room with leather chairs, original brick floor and large inglenook fireplace. This is where the chaps used to catch up over a cup of brew after a hard days work in the fields. Discussion was about the farm, the animals and what the weather was due to be in the next few days. Meanwhile the ladies were more interested in local village gossip. THE GARDEN ROOM : The garden room has spectacular views across the Romney Marshes towards the sea. Sit and relax here and enjoy the peace and quiet. Sit, relax and enjoy the stunning views across the valley. The comfortable wicker furniture and large aspect windows make this room a great place for viewing the landscape and bird life. For those twitchers amongst you we have a whole host of books and binoculars for your pleasure. PATIO AREA WITH BARBEQUE & KITCHEN GARDEN : Outside is a delightful patio area with a barbeque for those warm evenings. In addition there is a kitchen garden where herbs are grown for your use. GARDEN : The children will love time spent in the garden. A childrens slide, trampoline and the swingball game will keep them amused whilst the grownups can be cooking the dinner on the large BBQ on the patio. MASTER BEDROOM (SLEEPS 2) : The traditional Queen size Homestead bed and original oak floorboards make this a fascinating room. Wake up to the sunrise with sunbeams shining into the room, and then refresh yourself by having a glorious shower in adjacent ensuite. If that's not enough sit and relax on the Lloyd Loom easy chair and admire the view across the Romney Marshes. TWIN BEDROOM : The children's room is plain & simple just like the old days on the Farm. The ensuite Toilet means that the little tikes won't be bothering Mum and Dad in the middle of the night. BATHROOM : Enjoy relaxing in the original hot bath after a day exploring the countryside. The bathroom is completely modernised in a traditional style with wood paneling, a housed cistern, pedestal basin, electric shaver/hairdryer points and a power shower. There is no need to bring your bath linen, its all here waiting – nice and warm on the towel rail. PARKING : There is ample space for car parking and grocery orders can be delivered the next day or on arrival. THEMED BREAKS ARE AVAILABLE (UPON REQUEST) FOR GUESTS STAYING AT COLDHARBOUR COTTAGE : September: Local Farm & History Tour Many years ago a lovely lady called Joyce used to live in Coldharbour Cottage. During her last years she was cared for by two people (sisters) from Wittersham. So the first stop today is to meet the sisters and recall some of the stories of Coldharbour over a cup of tea / morning coffee. Enjoy the fun stories and hear how Joyce used to manage up on the hill during the cold, wet and windy winter months. After this we collect our picnic lunch and take a short visit to a local fruit farm in Peasmarsh, home of the world famous Granny Smith Apple. Meet the farmer and if you behave he will give you an apple! We then search for a quiet spot to have a picnic lunch in the countryside. Following on from this we take an adventure tour in a Landrover around the local farms and villages. Learn about how the area around the Farm was cultivated and take in the spectacular views. We return to the Cottage and set up a delicious barbeque in the evening for all to enjoy. May, June & July: Bushcraft Week Enjoy a day with the Host on a Bushcraft adventure. We head off into the countryside across the fields and along the small lanes around Stone. After collecting a pack lunch we pick a spot on the Farm and light a fire (without matches!) and cook a typical farmers traditional meal out in the open. Learn some bushcraft skills and as we enjoy together some of the countryside, looking out for wildlife, wild flowers, trees and some special birdwatching. This trip may vary, we visit local farms and villages around the countryside and some wildlife tracking. This special week is available to everyone staying in the Cottage during May, June or July August: Windmill Week This week is all about bread, wheat, flour and some cakes! Enjoy a day with the Host starting with a guided tour of the local Windmill in Stone. This is open just a few days every year but I have the key! Learn how the flour was milled in the local area. After this we collect our packed lunch and head off into the countryside for an arable adventure through local farms where the wheat is grown, stored and shipped out to the millers. Then we head back to the Cottage to learn how to mill wheat into flour the old way by using a grind stone. We'll make some simple bread and cakes ready for our evening barbeque around the fire. October: Pumpkins & Vegetables This week we learn how the old farmer used to keep warm in the Winter. An afternoon and evening spent with the Host begins with a trip to the garden to collect vegetables in season. We then take a short trip to the local store to collect some fresh bread and return back to the Cottage to cook a hearty meal. We can pick our own pumpkins from the cottage garden and make some soup over the open fire. Homemade bread and a delicious dessert with some hot punch to round of the evening. During the evening you will learn to play some of the simple games which the farmer and his family played in the Cottage. No cheating please! This special week is available to everyone staying in the Cottage during the first three weeks of October. November: Bonfire & Fireworks Finding Guido' is a special quiz for the children and adults to tackle during the week, with a nice prize if you find him! Where has he gone? Hidden in the Church? Buried in the Bushes? or curled up in the loft of the Old Barn? The Host will join you one afternoon during the week to build a bonfire on the Farm. We will make a Guy for the bonfire and enjoy some fireworks and sparklers for the children. Hot Soup, burgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob and desserts all cooked for you to enjoy on the barbeque in the evening. This special week is available to everyone staying in the Cottage during the first two weeks of November. Game Season: Winter Warmer An entire evening with the Host and the gamekeeper. Freshly caught rabbit and pheasant will be cooked over the open fireplace with some fresh vegetables. Join in the fun and listen to old farmers tales in the deep mid winter. It may be cold outside in January and February, the wind may blow but inside the cottage around the fireplace we cook a hearty meal for all to enjoy. This special week is available to everyone staying in the Cottage throughout January and February. |
