| ENJOY FINE DINING AT THE ACHILL CLIFF HOUSE RESTAURANT The restaurant at Achill Cliff House is renowned for its fresh food, fine wines and excellent value for money. We use fresh local produce for our dishes, with Achill lamb a speciality. Our restaurant currently holds a 'Highly Acclaimed' Dining Award from the RAC and is recommended in the Georgina Campbell Guide to Ireland. FRESH ATLANTIC SEAFOOD - Atlantic seafood, caught daily in the waters around Achill Island, is hugely popular in the restaurant. Wild salmon, black sole, cod and turbot are offered along with crab, mussels and Clew Bay oysters. Fresh Achill lobster is a delicacy not to be missed. We offer both a-la-carte and set-menu dining, with the set menu in particular offering excellent value for money. All our menus are complemented with fine wines from our wine list, or drinks from our fully-licensed bar. ABOUT ACHILL ISLAND... There is no other place like the island of Achill in all of Ireland. At 147 square km (57 square mi) and only 20 feet from the mainland, this mass of bogs and wild heather is is a unique holiday destination. A short causeway leads from the mainland to Achill Sound, the first village on the island. The main road runs through rhododendron plantations to Keel, which has a 3-km (2-mi) beach with spectacular cathedral-like rock formations in the cliffs at its east end. "Heaven on earth in good weather, when its splendid scenery can be fully appreciated, Achill Island is a destination you'll probably want to head for". There is a surprise around every corner as you traverse the scenic byway along the Achill coast known as "The Atlantic Drive" especially between Dooega and Dereens where the scenery of cliffs is spectacular. Scenic vistas abound and provide staggering views in all types of light and weather. On the northwest tip of the island, amazing views can be had from over the tall cliffs at Saddlehead. The seaside hamlet of Keel has a 3km beach with cathedral-like rock formations at the east end. Carrickildownet Castle in Kildownet, which belonged to Grace O'Malley, is a worthwhile stop and can be seen on Atlantic Drive, the road that circumnavigates the island and is a popular driving tour. Megalith tombs, holy wells, early Christian settlements and deserted villages can all be found on Achill Island. Climb Mt. Slievemore near Dugort to see ancient remains left by 19th century Catholic missionaries. On the way down, stop in Dugort to visit the cabin where Nobel Prize Winner Heinrich Böll wrote "Irish Diary" in the 1950s. Anglers travel to Achill annually between April and July for shark fishing. Cultural activities include traditional music classes offered by Scoil Acla in August. Scoil Acla also organizes drawing classes, a writer's workshop and a set-dancing workshop. Kildownet Cottage is a beautifully furnished holiday cottage with open fires in the scenic island of Achill, County Mayo, West Coast of Ireland ACCOMMODATION DETAILS Kildownet Cottage is let from Saturday to Saturday and is a five bedroomed self-catering holiday cottage situated on the south of the island, positioned in the heart of the small unspoiled village of Derreens, three miles from Achill Sound, 16 miles from Keel beach, 30 miles west of Westport, and 200 miles from Dublin. Kildownet Cottage offers the highest quality self-catering holiday accommodation, making it a real home from home. The holiday cottage is equipped with everything you will need to ensure a comfortable stay, making you feel completely at home during your time here. SLEEPING : The cottage comprises 5 bedrooms in total. 3 double, 2 twin, all of the bedrooms with en-suite facilities. This gives room for up to 10 people. All duvets, pillows and bedding are provided. Please bring your own towels. GENERAL : The cottage has 2 bathrooms and 2 WCs. Central heating keeps you snug and warm. ENTERTAINMENT : The cottage has a television/dvd. The music system will play cds, radio. If you need to keep in contact there is a telephone available. EATING & LIVING : There is room for 6 in the living room and 6 in the dining room. To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a microwave, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a dish washer, a washing machine, a clothes drier, an iron and ironing board. There is cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils. BED LINEN : Bed linen is provided and included in the rental tariff. TOWELS : Towels are not provided, please bring your own towels. NON SMOKING : There is a no smoking policy in the Cottage. TRAVEL DIRECTIONS TO ACHILL ISLAND BY CAR : FROM DUBLIN : Head for the M50 following signs for the WEST. Follow the M50 until you see an exit for the N4 ( West of Ireland), then take this road as far as Longford. Then take the N5 heading west through Strokestown, Charlestown, Swinford and on to Castlebar. Take the R311 road heading for Achill, then onto the N59 at Newport towards Achill, go through Mulranny village and onto the R319 to Achill Island (there is a bridge onto the island at Achill Sound). FROM GALWAY : Leave Galway and head for the Tuam road N17 (signposted Sligo, Tuam) and follow this on to Claregalway and on through Tuam and to Claremorris. At Claremorris follow the signs to Castlebar on the N60. From Castlebar follow signs for Achill on the R311, then onto the N59 at Newport towards Achill, go through Mulranny village and onto the R319 to Achill Island (there is a bridge onto the island at Achill Sound). FROM NORTHERN IRELAND : Head for Sligo, then take the N17 to Tubbercurry. At Charlestown, take the N5 to Castlebar. From Castlebar follow signs for Achill on the R311, then onto the N59 at Newport towards Achill, go through Mulranny village and onto the R319 to Achill Island (there is a bridge onto the island at Achill Sound). TRAIN : Trains operate from Dublin to Castlebar and Westport.
