THE OLD CHAPEL (Sleeps 6), A FEW PACES FROM THE BEACH IN KINGSAND, CORNWALL
Holiday Cottages in Kingsand, Cornwall
The Old Chapel is a radical Modernist conversion of a nineteenth-century Methodist chapel. It was designed in 1971 by the architect Trevor Bedford for the musician V.A.Hayes, winning an architectural prize.

Its sociable free-flowing space is designed to gain maximum light, and it is executed in simple materials like white-painted blockwork and varnished pine.

The living area is at the top of the building, and the architect's integration of inside and outside space is so successful that summer nights with the large windows open are like sleeping in a very luxurious tent.

It is hung with African textiles and some of the owners' art collection. There are books on pertinent subjects - flora and fauna, the neighbourhood, the sea and the navy.

It is soporifically comfortable, with views over the roofs of the village (with jackdaws strolling up them), out to sea on three sides, and over meadows and hills with contented cows & hungry hawks on the fourth.

The coast, one of the most beautiful in Cornwall, has the South Cornwall Coastal Path as its companion, so that there are excellent walks of any length in all directions. One runs through the eighteenth-century Mount Edgcumbe Park, with Gothick ruins, poets' seats, Roman arches, pagan wells and other delights, and cream tea in the Italian Garden at the end. For military fans there are Georgian and Victorian coastal fortifications all around. For botanists one of these is now a nature reserve, where you find orchids. Best of all, it is only 110 yards from the nearest beach, where you can swim, read or watch the shipping in Plymouth Sound, while children will occupy themselves from dawn to dusk in the rock pools.

Kingsand is on the south eastern tip of Cornwall adjoining Cawsand village on the Rame Peninsula. It is a former fishing village with tiny streets and little traffic. The beach is a minute away down a footpath. There are lots of rock pools with swimming from safe, clean beaches. Sailing and boating are popular in the sheltered bay and there is excellent fishing from the rocks for bass and mackerel. There are four pubs/restaurants, a couple of tea shops with great Cornish ice-cream next to the beaches, a gift shops, post office and a general stores open 7 days a week. Kingsand is in a conservation area of outstanding natural beauty, with quiet secluded beaches, magnificent scenery & spectacular walks. There are a lots of long & short walks. Kingsand is on the Coastal Path, which winds its way through the 800 acre Mount Edgcumbe Park adjoining the village.
